  Who we are 

  The word Ombudsman dates back to 1809 when the Swedish Parliament
  created a new official known as the Justitie-Ombudsman. This loosely
  translates as "citizen's defender" or "representative of the people"
  Today, many countries have adopted the Ombudsman concept. At present
  the International Ombudsman Institute has more than 100 national
  ombudsman-type institutions affiliated to it. 

  The first NSW Ombudsman was appointed in 1975 and the legislation
  became operative in May that year. Since then, there have been many 
  changes; public authorities have merged and separated and there have
  been five very different Ombudsman. 
  
  What we do 

  We investigate and report on complaints about the conduct of a 
  NSW agency or their employee, including both government and some 
  non-Government agencies. Over the years we have helped many 
  thousands of people resolve their grievances with government 
  agencies. 

  Since inception, we have dealt with about 145,000 formal complaints,
  and over 220,000 informal complaints. While in that time we have
  achieved much for individual complainants, there have also been 
  significant  achievements which benefit the public through 
  improvements in public administration. 

  If you are unhappy about the way you have been treated by a NSW 
  agency or their employee you can complain to us. NSW agencies 
  include government departments and statutory authorities, for
  example, police, local councils, schools, universities and TAFEs 
  and some non-government agencies, for example, area health services,
  non-government schools, child care centres and agencies provide
  substitute residential care. 

  We investigate conduct which may be: 

  illegal 
  unreasonable, unjust or oppressive 
  improperly discriminatory 
  based on improper motives or irrelevant grounds 
  based on a mistake of law or fact 

  We are independent and impartial and offer services free of charge.
